Arugam Bay – A surfer’s paradise

Arugam Bay, located approximately 320 kms and an 8 hour drive away from Colombo, is in close proximity to the town of Pottuvil. With its breathtaking bay and three key surf spots (Arugam Point, Pottuvil Point and Crocodile Rock) Arugam Bay is amongst the ten best locations in the world for surfing. The surf is at its best from April thru late September.

In addition to surfing, scuba diving facilities for underwater photography and exploring of centuries old ship wrecks are all possible. Comfortable hotel accommodation is available in Arugam bay but it’s advisable to book these facilities before departing Colombo.

In between surfing, take time off to visit three of Sri-Lanka’s important wildlife sanctuaries, Yala, Lahugala and the Kumana bird sanctuary which are all located within a one hour drive from Arugam Bay.

Arugam Bay has historical importance as well with a number of ancient temples and cave dwellings situated in the surrounding jungles that are well worth a visit. Appreciate the importance of a mangrove eco system by taking an eco-tour in the Pottuvil lagoon.
